These easy Gluten-Free Homemade Dog Treats with pumpkin, peanut butter, rolled oats, and maple syrup, are a healthy treat for your favorite furry friend.

Dog biscuits of different sizes on a piece of parchment paper.

Whether your dog follows a gluten-free diet or not, these peanut butter and pumpkin dog treats are made with simple ingredients your four-legged friend will love.

If your pup is anything like mine, they will be watching in anticipation as you bake!

    Why you'll love this recipe

    • Healthy ingredients
    • Softer treats that aren't rock hard
    • 4-ingredient recipe

    Ingredients

Here are a few quick notes about the ingredients in this recipe. You can see a complete ingredient list and instructions in the recipe card below.

Ingredients to make homemade dog treats in bowls of different sizes.

Gluten-free oats - To ensure these homemade treats are gluten-free, buy certified gluten-free oats. If needed, store-bought gluten-free oat flour will work too.

Pumpkin puree - Canned pumpkin is the easiest and most likely already in your pantry. If you make your own puree, that works too! Canned sweet potato is a great substitute.

Natural peanut butter - All-natural creamy peanut butter is recommended for this recipe to ensure no added sugar or other artificial ingredients.

Maple syrup - A little bit of this natural sweetener helps bind the dog cookies and adds a touch of sweetness.

    Step-by-step instructions

Before you start: Get out your rolling pin, parchment paper, and baking sheet. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 1: In the bowl of a food processor, add oats and pulse until you have a course oat flour. Then add pumpkin, peanut butter, and maple syrup.

Step 2: Pulse, then process on high until all ingredients are incorporated and a dough forms.

Step 3: Transfer dough to a silpat or parchment-lined pastry board. Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness.

Step 4: Use a cookie cutter and press shapes into the dough, then place them onto the prepared baking sheet. Pull away extra dough and reroll. Bake for 12-15 minutes, edges should start to golden. Allow gluten-free dog biscuits to cool completely on the baking sheet before storing them in an airtight container.

    Tips

    • I used this cookie cutter to make bone shapes, but any cookie cutter or small lid will work to cut out the dough.
    • If you don't have a food processor, use a high-powered blender to blitz your oats, then transfer to a large bowl and stir all ingredients together.

This recipe makes a good amount of tasty treats. For a longer storage option, place them in a freezer-safe ziplock bag and keep them in the freezer. Take out the number of small treats needed and store them at room temperature in an airtight container.

    FAQ

What sweetener is safe for homemade dog treats?

100% pure maple syrup and pure honey are both safe for dogs in small quantities. Always check the ingredient label to ensure the sweetener is 100% pure and does not have any added ingredients, like xylitol, that may be toxic to dogs.

What can you substitute for flour in dog treats?

This is a great recipe for dog treats that do not need flour. Rolled oats are blitzed in a food processor to create a course flour to form the treats.

Please note: This gluten-free dog treat recipe is meant to be eaten in moderation and as a treat only. It is always a good idea to check ingredient labels before making to ensure there are no artificial or added ingredients that may be toxic to dogs. Contact your veterinarian with any questions or concerns regarding ingredients safe specifically for your dog's diet and food allergies.

    Ingredients

    • 1 ½ cup (150g) gluten-free oats
    • ½ cup all-natural peanut butter
    • ½ cup canned pumpkin
    • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper of a silpat.
    • In the bowl of a food processor, add oats and pulse until you have a course oat flour. Then add pumpkin, peanut butter, and maple syrup.
    • Pulse, then process on high until all ingredients are incorporated and a dough forms. You may need to stop it occasionally to wipe down sides of bowl.
    • Transfer dough to a silpat or parchment-lined pastry board. Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness. To keep dough from sticking to rolling pin, place an additional piece of parchment paper on top of dough.
    • Use a cookie cutter and press shapes into the dough, then place them onto the prepared baking sheet. Pull away extra dough and reroll. Bake for 12-15 minutes, edges should start to golden. Allow gluten-free dog biscuits to cool completely on the baking sheet before storing them in an airtight container.

    Notes

To store: Store dog treats at room temperature in an airtight container for 5-7 days.
To freeze: Place treats in a freezer-safe ziplock bag and freeze up to 3 months.
    • Since this recipe makes a large number of biscuits, freeze a portion and take them out as needed.
    • I used this cookie cutter to make bone shapes, but any cookie cutter or small lid will work to cut out the dough.
    • If you don't have a food processor, use a high-powered blender to blitz your oats, then transfer to a large bowl and stir all ingredients together.
