Ingredients and substitutions
Here are a few quick notes about the ingredients in this recipe. You can see a complete ingredient list and instructions in the recipe card below.
Chicken - Chicken thighs or chicken breasts can be used for this recipe. To cut down on prep time, you can use cooked chicken like rotisserie chicken. This is a fantastic way to use leftover chicken and works great in my gluten-free chicken soup and gluten-free chicken salad.
Sweet potatoes - You can use fresh sweet potatoes or cut down on prep time by using cubed frozen sweet potatoes.
Chicken broth - Make sure the brand you are using is gluten-free. You can substitute chicken stock if needed.
Carrots, yellow onion, and celery - These favorite veggies add flavor and texture.
Garlic cloves - For faster prep, I like using prepared minced garlic.
Ground cumin, smoked paprika, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper - These warm spices make for a delicious soup! A pinch of cayenne pepper can be substituted for red pepper flakes.
