Avocados - The secret ingredient in this healthy recipe! Avocados are full of healthy fats and the perfect ingredient for a creamy mousse. Use ripe avocados that are just starting to soften and are still a vibrant green. Avoid overly ripe avocados, especially those with brown spots.
Unsweetened cocoa powder - This gives the vegan chocolate mousse its deep chocolate flavor just like in this vegan chocolate pudding. Make this a superfood dessert and substitute cacao powder for cocoa powder. Raw cacao powder does have a more intense dark chocolate flavor.
Dates - Dates are a fantastic natural sweetener and a great source of fiber! I recommend using Medjool dates as they are softer and sweeter than other varieties. I love freezing dates so I always have them on hand.
Almond milk - I prefer to use gluten-free unsweetened almond milk but you can substitute other dairy-free milk like coconut milk, oat milk, or soy milk.
Maple syrup - Pure maple syrup is the perfect natural sweetener for this vegan chocolate mousse. It adds to the creamy texture and gives the mousse the right amount of sweetness. Honey (not vegan) or agave nectar make good maple syrup substitutes but will be slightly sweeter.
Vanilla extract - Gluten-free pure vanilla extract adds sweetness to this healthy dessert without added sugar.

Step 3: Serve immediately or refrigerate for 30 minutes before serving to chill. Garnish with chocolate chips or shavings, cacao nibs, whipped cream, berries, or a sprinkle of sea salt if desired.
Recipe tips
Stop the blender periodically to scrape the sides with a rubber spatula. This will help ensure that the healthy chocolate mousse is fully incorporated and results in a silky texture.
This chilled dessert is best when fresh. It can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days, but the avocado flavor becomes prominent the longer it is stored.
