This last weekend we spent some time with dear friends in Asheville, North Carolina. One evening, we were discussing “last meal-worthy” foods. While my last meal would probably consist of pizza, without a doubt, my last dessert would be these peanut butter swirl brownies….
I have a confession.
I used to loathe anything flavored with lemon. More specifically, those of the candy or baked-goods variety.
When my grandparents used to visit us growing up, my grandma would always make a lemon meringue pie—my dad’s favorite—while they were in town. I would sit there at the table picking off the meringue until I hit that *eww* layer of lemon.
Boy, how times have changed. And thank goodness. While I’ll take chocolate concoctions of any kind, any day, the arrival of Spring has had me craving the bright and tart flavors of lemon….
There is nothing like a slice of banana bread. As a self-proclaimed lover/hater of bananas, throw some in a baked good and I’ll be the first in line for a bite.
Add some tahini into that banana bread and I might not want to share.
If you’ve been a reader here long enough, you probably will have noticed my growing love of tahini (have you tried my chocolate tahini cookies?) and the nutty flavor it lends to both sweet and savory foods….
I have yet to decorate for the holidays, but I’m happy to report that my kitchen has started the festivities in full force. Or, if you count the white string lights we left wrapped around the industrial piping that zig-zags back and forth across our ceiling, then we’re already done.
Roasted hazelnuts are one of my very favorite things to pull out of the oven. Their aroma and the shedding of their thin, wispy skins allows hazelnuts to transform into cookies, crisps, and other delectable baked goods….
You know fall is in full swing when the pumpkin end-of-aisle displays in the grocery store rival the apple end-of-aisle displays. That’s not really a problem in my book, and it is not unusual to find me standing in the grocery store looking slowly and carefully at each and every “you won’t believe it’s pumpkin” item.
I’m a sucker for seasonal food marketing.
So you better believe that since the #virtualpumpkinparty is blowing up the inter webs today with all things pumpkin, you know where to find me.
Sara of Cake Over Steak and Aimee of Twigg Studios are hosting the #virtualpumpkinparty, and over a 100 food bloggers have joined in to bring you delicious pumpkin-filled recipes that are sweet, savory, and everything in-between. My contribution to the pumpkin potluck? This easy pumpkin bread….
I was quite sure I wasn’t going to have a post ready for this week even though I have wanted to share this mixed berry crumble tart for quite some time now.
We returned from our road trip through the southwest last weekend to the news that my freshman college roommate had passed away. News that was sudden, much too early, and impossibly sad. We fell out of touch after college, but both of us eventually made it back to our hometown of Kansas City. It was her, a friendly high school acquaintance I knew through music ensembles, that had told me late into our senior year about her college plans and future program of study. I was instantly sure I needed to do the same, and although my fall plans were already pretty much set, they changed that day.
We were both southern-bound as college freshman, and since we knew each other well enough, we figured rooming together made the best sort of sense. Two Kansas City girls going far from home. A familiar face and someone to talk to could only help break-in the newness of our impending adulthood….
